Two wooden beads on a leather thong. One of the most recognised symbols in Scouting. And you can earn yours.
The Wood Badge is your chance to grow as a volunteer and give young people an even better experience of Scouting. We want every volunteer in Vale of Clwyd to go for it, and we will help you get there.

It’s your choice
The Wood Badge is no longer mandatory. You choose to do it, and that’s what makes it worth having.
It doesn’t matter if you’ve been volunteering for six months or six years. When you’re ready, we’re ready. Get in touch and we’ll work out where to start together.
Which Wood Badge is for you?
Section Wood Badge For volunteers who work directly with young people in Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts or Explorers.
Manager and Supporter Wood Badge For volunteers who lead and support other volunteers, such as Group, District or County Lead Volunteers and Team Leaders.
Not sure which one applies to you? Get in touch with our Volunteer Development Team for support and Guidance.
Start with Growing Roots
Growing Roots is the foundation learning every Scouts volunteer completes. It’s all online through My Learning on scouts.org.uk and covers Safety, Safeguarding, Creating Inclusion, Data Protection in Scouts, and Who We Are and What We Do.
Once that’s done, you’re ready to go for your Wood Badge.
Joined before November 2024? If your Growing Roots learning was automatically signed off when the new digital tools launched, you’ll still need to complete Creating Inclusion plus either Delivering a Great Programme (Section) or Leading Scout Volunteers (Manager/Supporter). Email Aimee if you’re not sure where you stand.
How to get started
1. Sign in to scouts.org.uk
2. Open My Learning It’s in your profile. If you can’t see it, click the Scouts logo top left.
3. Assign your Wood Badge Go to Wood Badges and Skills, click the Wood Badges tab, hit the + button and choose the right one for your role.
4. Enrol in your skills You’ll see what you need to complete. Some skills are online. Others are delivered locally in Vale of Clwyd. Contact Aimee to find out what’s coming up and how to book.
5. Complete the learning Work through each skill. There’s no race. Do it at a pace that fits around your volunteering.
6. Request your assessment When you finish a skill, go back into My Learning and click Assessment. A Learning Assessor will review your evidence and credit the skill on your profile.
7. Get your beads Once all your skills are credited, your Wood Badge goes to the District Lead Volunteer, who will present it to you. You’ll have earned every bit of it.
