A local Scout leader has been formally recognised for his courageous actions during a serious road traffic collision earlier this year.
Tony Johnson, Group Lead Volunteer for 1st Denbigh Scout Group, was awarded a Commissioner’s Commendation in front of his Cubs and Scouts during a special presentation at the group’s woodland base this week.
The award recognises Tony’s selfless and decisive response to a multi-vehicle collision that took place near his home in Bodfari in April. Upon hearing the crash, Tony was one of the first on the scene. Realising one of the vehicles was on fire and that a driver remained inside, Tony, alongside a neighbour, helped the driver to safety. The vehicle became fully engulfed in flames just minutes later.
Presenting the award, Jacob Jones, District Lead Volunteer said:
“Tony’s quick thinking and calm actions in a highly pressurised situation made a real difference. This commendation acknowledges not only what he did, but the way he carried himself throughout — with compassion, courage, and a strong sense of community. It was a privilege to present this award in front of his young people and fellow volunteers, who clearly hold him in such high regard.”
Tony, who has volunteered with the 1st Denbigh Scout Group for a number of years, was visibly surprised by the presentation. The group’s young members were proud to celebrate their leader’s achievement, reflecting the Scout values of helping others and stepping up in times of need.
The Commissioner’s Commendation is a rare award, given to individuals who demonstrate exceptional conduct or service. Tony’s actions are a shining example of how volunteers play vital roles not only in shaping young lives, but in supporting their wider communities too.
