The Access to Adventure Fund exists to make sure every young person can take part in Scouts, whatever their circumstances. We know that asking for support can feel uncomfortable, so this fund is managed quietly, respectfully and in complete confidence.

We will never ask for personal or detailed financial information. We simply want to remove barriers so every young person has the same chance to join in, try new things and enjoy the adventure that Scouting offers.

How the fund works

The Access to Adventure Fund can be used to help with the essential costs of taking part in Scouts. This includes:

  • event or camp fees
  • activities and trips
  • transport costs
  • uniform or basic equipment
  • subscription fees, if needed

The fund is limited and all applications are considered fairly and on their own merits. Because of this, we cannot guarantee that every request will be supported in full, but we will always do our best to help.

Where possible, we encourage Groups and Units to reduce or share costs locally, for example by passing on used uniform or coordinating shared transport.

Who can apply

To protect dignity and avoid families feeling they have to explain their personal circumstances, applications must come from:

• Group Lead Volunteers
• Section Team Leaders

Parents, carers and young people cannot apply directly.

If you are a parent or carer who feels that costs might stop your child taking part, please speak quietly with their leader. If you are an adult volunteer who needs support, speak to someone you trust in your Group or Section.

Confidentiality

All applications are handled discreetly by the District Team. We do not record or request the names of young people receiving support. Only the leader making the request will know who the support is for.

Making an application

Leaders can apply on behalf of a young person or adult volunteer by completing the Access to Adventure Fund Application Form. The form asks for only the essential information: what support is needed, why, and how it will help someone to take part.
